From a difficult problem to a usable system.

Velo helps New York City cyclists make better route decisions by evaluating multiple risk factors instead of simply returning the shortest path. It combines geographic and public-safety data, applies weighted risk scoring, and presents safer cycling routes through an interactive map.

THE PROBLEM

What had to change

Traditional navigation tools optimize mainly for speed and distance. Cyclists also need to understand crash patterns, road conditions, infrastructure quality, traffic exposure, and surrounding safety risks.

THE SOLUTION

How the product responds

Velo calculates route-level safety scores and uses data-driven weighting to help riders compare routes and understand why one option may be safer than another.

TECHNICAL APPROACH

How the system fits together

The application brings multiple public and geospatial datasets into a common route-analysis workflow. A weighted risk model evaluates segments, while the map interface turns the resulting score into route comparisons and understandable safety context.
